1974 Sindy: Active (Ballerina), S653

1974 Sindy: Active (Ballerina), S653.

A collage made from the 1974 Sindy catalogue.

The doll in the collage, above, is a prototype Sindy Pedigree used for the catalogue. Both the doll and the outfit looked different when sold in the stores. See photos further down.

The photos below are from the 1975 Sindy catalogue, but shows how the shops could present the Sindy items and as you can see the items are from 1974. Look at the Active Sindys on the top shelf!

It’s always hard to set a rule of how the Sindy items looked exactly in each year and which precise design the box had. As we know, Pedigree liked to use up materials, body parts and also packages that they still had in their storage, so there can be a lot of variations! But TLSM has tried to find the most common type of it all and this is the conclusion.

This is the first Active Sindy made, and she has a very hard head, with rich face colours and long eyelashes. She has brunette, blond or auburn hair, in the typical Sindy styled pony tail, with a lilac ribbon, matching her skirt. She has a double twist waist, a double neck joint, riveted shoulder joints, ball joints at the wrists so her hands can bend and rotate, bending elbows and click- click knees but no bending ankles. Active Sindy can do split both sideways and back-/frontwards.

It’s hard to find a played-with ballerina, between 1974 and 1978, with both her hands still on the ball joint, since the plastic brakes really easy at the joints and the hands drops off.

Her complete ballet outfit consists of a white leotard, fishnet tights and a removable lilac skirt. Without it, she can be a gymnast or a dancer in rehearsals. She also has a pair of moulded white rubber/plastic ballet shoes with silk cord to tie around her ankles.

This Sindy doll (not the boxed one) is here at The Little Sindy Museum.  She was purchased as an ‘used’ Sindy Active doll. TLSM is not 100% certain the head or body haven’t been switched but, as far as we can tell, it should be the correct doll on the photos below. Click on a photo to see it enlarged!
