1981 Sindy: Active (Ballerina), 44664

1981 Sindy: Active (Ballerina), 44664.

Active Sindy from the 1981 Pedigree Catalogue.

It’s always hard to set a rule of how the Sindy items looked exactly in each year and which precise design the box had. As we know, Pedigree liked to use up materials, body parts and also packages that they still had in their storage, so there can be a lot of variations! But TLSM has tried to find the most common type of it all and this is the conclusion.

It’s easy to believe the 1981 Active Sindy is the ballerina that was sold in the beautiful “Swan Lake box” since there are swans in the picture, describing her in the 1981 Pedigree catalogue. But most likely she came in the same box as the 1979 and 1980 Active Sindy did, since nothing changed on the ballerinas during those years.

So Sindy is the same since 1979, with a soft head with the markings “2 GEN 1077” and under it the numbers “033055X” above her neck. Her hair is brunette, blond or auburn hold back in the typical Sindy styled pony tail with a pink ribbon, matching her shoes and skirt. She has light face colours double neck joint, “all-rubber arms” with bending elbows, hinged hands, fully poseable waist, click-click knees and bending ankles. Sindy can do split both sideways and back-/frontwards. Her body is marked Made in Hong Kong.

Her ballerina shoes are made of pink rubber/plastic with the fastenings in the same material. She still has her white leotard and fishnet tights so she can be a gymnast or a dancer in rehearsals.

This Sindy doll (not the boxed one) is here at The Little Sindy Museum.  She was purchased as an ‘used’ Sindy Active doll. TLSM is not 100% certain the head or body haven’t been switched but, as far as we can tell, it should be the correct doll on the photos below. Click on a photo to see it enlarged!

In 1981 the Active Sindy Ballerina was sold at Wesco as 44663U and this is how that box looked like:

Notice the base of the peg (in the centre picture) that was pushed into the back of Sindy’s head to keep her extra steady in the box. Sometimes you can find dolls with that peg still attached to her head. It was meant to be removed when you released Sindy from the box.

There was also a note with instructions of how to “tie” her shoes.
